How To Stop A Bullet

“The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever”

Psalm 121:8

I read a true story yesterday about a bus driver in Dayton, Ohio, who was shot in the chest twice and survived. His name is Rickey Wagner and what makes his story so amazing isn’t just that he survived getting shot in the chest from point blank range, but how he survived being shot twice in the chest.

Rickey had gotten out of his bus and was working on something mechanical. As he got out of the bus he put his jacket on when suddenly a few young men ages fifteen to eighteen, walked up and confronted him. All Rickey could remember was one of the kids saying to the other, “You gotta kill him if you are gonna be one of us” speaking of the gang he was initiating to join. Suddenly, two shots were fired and the kids ran off. Here’s the amazing part of the story. Rickey Wagner survived being shot because he had underneath his coat a Bible. He had put his bible under his coat while he was inside the bus. When he walked outside to work on the bus his Bible was still underneath his coat. The Bible stopped the bullets.

That story brings to mind the words of the apostle Paul who wrote in Ephesians 6:10-17, “A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

You could say God’s Word stopped the bullets from killing Rickey Wagner literally that day and God’s Word the apostle Paul reminds us will protect us from the fiery darts of the enemy of our soul today too. The bible tells us that the devil goes around like a roaring lion looking for people to devour and yet God’s Word also reminds us that if we stand our ground and resist the devil he will flee from us, as the devil is no match for God in us.

Keep this in mind today. God’s Word is truth and the more we know the truth the truth will set us free! Jesus defeated the lies of the enemy by standing on the truth of God’s Word. If it worked for Jesus it will work for us too!

“The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.”

Proverbs 18:10
