Good and Tired
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
Galatians 6:9
I hate regret because for me regret always has to do with something I either didn’t do or quit or gave up on. And sadly when we quit or give up we will never know what might have been. A jingle comes to mind that I heard years ago, “If if’s and but’s were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas!” For the last few years I have had to deal with a number of health issues that make me feel like I am always taking three steps forward immediately followed two steps back. I try not to forget that no matter what I did end up one step ahead but every once in a while I do get emotionally exhausted and lose sight.
When I start to feel good the first thing I want to do is try riding my bike. The last time out I found myself far from home and just hoping I had enough strength to make it back. I wasn’t worried about my speed, I just wanted to make it home without having to call my wife to pick me up. As I slowly made my way down the bike path the words of Charles Spurgeon came to mind when he said, “by perseverance the snail reached the ark”. I love the imagery that thought produced as I inched along. I wasn’t just relieved when I finally pulled up in my driveway, I was happy too. No matter how slow I went, I finished.
It has been well noted by behavioral scientists that the most important characteristic to success is perseverance. Often times in business and in life we quit too soon. It was King Solomon who penned, “I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.” In other words, the best team doesn’t always win. Sometimes it’s just the team or individual that refuses to give up and quit.
Are you going through a tough time today? Don’t quit, stay positive and remember the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “When you are going through Hell keep going!” Don’t give up C.S. Lewis would say because, “There are far far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” I am praying for you!
“I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.
