Keep The Main Thing The Main Thing

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Matthew 6:33

I’m laughing out loud this morning as I think back to something Don Adams would say in the hit television show, “Maxwell Smart”. He would say, “You missed it by that much”. His remark was funny, so funny it’s been turned into a meme on social media. That image came to mind this morning as I was reading yet another quote that wasn’t funny at all that said, “Most Christians do not have fellowship with God; they have fellowship with each other about God” which stung as I read it and it brought to mind a C.S. Lewis quote, “Aim at the earth and you get nothing. Aim at heaven and you get the earth thrown in”.

Even being a pastor I confess there are times when I get together with other believers I do so because I enjoy them and all the more when our conversations are about Jesus. I think that is one of the beauties of the church, we exist to love God and love one another and yet I understand that many see church as nothing more than a social club and we end up missing out on what God had intended “by just that much”. We miss out on God. Often times we attend church because our friends go there, not because God chose to meet us there because if the truth be known we were not even looking to meet God there. The conversations can quickly go from being Jesus centered to eventually having little to do with Jesus at all. Like the old saying that is true, “People come to church for many reasons but they stay for only one, relationships.” Oh how easy it is for us to miss it by that much! If we are not careful we can end up loving the gift (fellowship) more than the Giver.

Through the years I have read enough books on ministry to fill a few book shelves. A couple of quotes from a psychology book I read said when people walk through the doors of any given church there is a very pressing question going through their mind, “Is there anyone here like me?” And the other quote that stood out said, “people make a decision within the first 7 seconds if they are going to stay or they are going to go” when visiting a church for the first time. No idea if thats true or not but it has always stuck with me how often we miss God’s plan “by just that much”

Here’s the point. The only thing that truly satisfies in this life is God and the reason is, God doesn’t change, He doesn’t die, He doesn’t move away, He won’t leave you hanging, He never promises what He will not fulfill. God never fails, He doesn’t break or get old. He loves you always and He is with you always not only in life but in death too. There is none like Him. I think you get the point as the list could go on and on. People come, people go, but the Lord, He is our Rock! Don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy Jesus today and to have fellowship with Him! Remember, “If God is your gold He will be your gladness. If God is your treasure He will be your pleasure”

“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires”

Psalm 37:4

I LOVE YOU!
