5 More Minutes

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”

John 14:1-4

After being in the car for hours I would complain to my parents, “When are we going to be there?” The answer was often the same, “5 more minutes”. My parents would say that in hopes I would sit back and relax thinking we would arrive shortly. Reading in John’s Gospel something a friend of mine once told me came to mind, “God is never there when you want Him to be there but He is always on time.” It’s taken me years to understand what my friend told me is absolutely true. Here in John 14 on the night before Jesus went to the Cross and died for us making heaven possible to those who look to Him, He gathered His disciples together to reassure them that everything that was about to happen was all part of a grander plan and obviously because of the time gap between then and now Jesus wanted them and us to learn how to be patient as we wait.

Read what Jesus said to comfort His disciples then and how those words can and should bring comfort to you and me as followers of Jesus now. Jesus told His disciples in John 14:2-4, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

It’s been 2,000 years since Jesus spoke these words and sadly for some those words are “falling on deaf ears” as the saying goes as many have gown tired of waiting and have moved on. 2 Peter 3:9 reminds us, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” When I consider how long its been since Jesus spoke these words to His disciples that He would come again to receive us to Himself and I study my bible I understand more fully that Gods process is often slow because God is more interested in the process than He is the outcome. Can you think of any valuable lessons you have learned while you are waiting? No wonder, “love is patient.”

Jesus will return one day just as He said, it could even be today! When He returns He will come for those who have placed their hope and trust in Him and He will take us home to the father’s house where a place is being prepared for us. Until then we need to hold on to His words, “And where I go you know, and the way you know.” We know Jesus is in heaven today and the way each of us make our way to Heaven is trusting in Jesus words when He said speaking of Himself, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except by Me!” Time has a way of revealing our patience and our trust. It could really be, just 5 more minutes so keep trusting Jesus!

“Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 27:14

I LOVE YOU!
