A Friend Like Susan
“As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.”
Proverbs 25:25
My wish for you today is that you have a friend like Susan. Everyone needs a friend and even the apostle Paul had a friend in Barnabas who was known as an encourager, someone who was there with Paul through the thick and the thin, the good times and the bad. From Studying the life of Barnabas we discover a single talent, a simple skill that any of us can develop to be used of God in profound ways in the life of others, encouragement. I am thankful for my friend and neighbor, Susan. Every once in a while just out of the blue I will receive a text from her with something funny or something meaningful just to encourage me, to make me laugh or smile. She has a heart like Barnabas for sure.
Have you ever received a text from out of the blue from someone saying hello or that they were praying for you without you even asking for prayer or it wasn’t even a special event like a birthday or Christmas or Easter? How about an email or a text or a private message on your favorite social media platform with an encouraging note or even better still, a scripture verse attached to it that is so fitting to your current life situation you just know it was from the Lord? I think we all would say we appreciate when things like that happen to us. The good news today is, they can. It just starts with me and you.
Calling someone on the phone or sending a hand written note through the mail or just sending a text message of encouragement just might be the very thing that makes someones day. Max Lucado describes the impact these simple acts of kindness can have on others as a, “Sacred Delight”. He goes on to explain that a “Sacred Delight” is, “like Good News through the back door of your heart. It’s hope where you least expect it: a flower in life’s sidewalk.”
If you think about it, it really doesn’t take much to make someones day, probably less than a minute or so to encourage someone else with a note, a text message letting them know you were thinking of them and or praying for them, and a bible verse goes a long way in reminding us of the hope we have in Jesus too.
Let God use you like my friend Susan today, be a light for someone in this dark world. Be salt in someone’s life in hopes of adding some spice to what might other wise be just a bland day. Let God use you to encourage and to build others up in a world that so easily tears or seeks to pull us down. Who knows, it might just be the best minute of the day for you and those you reach out too, kind of like finding a flower in life’s sidewalk.
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.”
