There's Still Time!

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 15:57

Christmas time and football playoffs go hand in hand. It’s not unusual around our house to have a football game on the tv playing in the background even if no one is watching it. In all fairness I prefer the last two minutes of the game over the previous 58 as it seems like that’s where all the action is. Football teams even have terms for the last couple of minutes of the game. You will hear the announcers speak of the “2 minute drill” or the “hurry up offense” to describe the offensive scheme.

One of the things that made the apostle Paul so effective in life and in ministry was how he lived with the understanding that the time is short. If Paul’s life was a football game it’s safe to say he lived it like he was in a “hurry up” offense or in the midst of the “two minute drill”. On more than one occasion Paul wrote to remind the church to be mindful that we are, “living in these last days” and not much time remains. One thing is for sure, the apostle Paul like all the hero’s of the New Testament all shared one thing in common. They set out as Ephesians 5 exhorts us, “redeem the time for the days are evil.”

As another year comes to an end I want to encourage you by reminding you there is still time. The game isn’t over until it’s over as they say. My favorite football team growing up was the Pittsburg Steelers and my favorite player was Franco Harris. With just 5 seconds left on the clock he scored the winning touchdown on a freak play where the ball was deflected by the defense into his hands almost 20 yards away. The play to this day is called the “Immaculate Reception”. What is it that you hoped to accomplish this year but for whatever reason it remains undone? A couple things to consider with just a few days left in 2022, “the best time to plant a shade tree was 25 years ago. The second best time is today.” Or even better still, “If you want to bear fruit you have to be willing to go out on a limb. Thats where the fruit is.” Go for it, there’s still time as a lot can happen in 5 seconds!

I LOVE YOU!
