The Day After Christmas

The Day After Christmas

“After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.”

Luke 2:17–20

Unfortunately the day after Christmas can be depressing for more people than you might think, especially those with the gift of hospitality and a servants heart. With so much planning and preparation that go into Christmas Day as family, often times from far away come together for the holidays, only to tun right back around and head home after sharing a meal and gifts it only makes sense that you wouldn't want the day to end. So, if you find yourself a little down in the dumps after Christmas just know you are completely normal and you are not alone.

One of the many blessings of Christmas is being reminded that Jesus is our 'Immanuel' and for good reason. God promises to be 'with us' at the height of our Christmas celebration just as He is present in our moments of despair when we feel all alone. I can’t help but think of Elijah in 1 Kings 18 after defeating the prophets of Baal. He was enjoying the high that comes with the awareness of God’s presence and blessing, only to experience that feeling of abandonment and aloneness in the next moment as he fled the wicked queen Jezebel.

Just as it was normal for Mary to rest after giving birth to Jesus, its wise for those who labor over the holidays to take some time to rest too. Follow Mary’s lead in recovering from all the events of Christmas. She listened to all the stories that were shared and she captured them in her heart and she thought about them often. Do what they shepherds did as they returned home. They glorified God, praising Him for all they had heard and seen. Yes, loved one, that's great advice on how to spend the day after Christmas.

I LOVE YOU!
