Debt Free!

“He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins” Ephesians 1:7

I’m not sure if you are aware of this or not but did you know Jesus Christ was born into this world to get us out of debt and prevent us from ever being in debt again. Personal finance personality Dave Ramsey warns about the cost of debt, our good intentions at Christmas. He calls it the $483 mistake. “Let’s say you get carried away and put $998 of Christmas spending on a credit card with an interest rate of 17%. And you decide to pay only the minimum payment of $25 each month because it just seems easier that way. Get this: It would take you five years to pay off your balance! By the time it’s all said and done, your $998 worth of stuff would cost you $1,481.55—thanks to interest. Ouch! That’s an extra $483 (and some change) tacked on to your holiday bill—for just one year of Christmas spending.” Economists are estimating the average household will take on an additional $1,500 of debt this Christmas.

Now put that in spiritual terms. The Bible makes very clear “sin” is a debt and that you and I owe, a debt that we cannot pay for the simple fact, “the wages of sin is death” and yet Christmas to Jesus is all about us becoming debt free. Jesus Christ was born into the world to save us from death which is the result of our sin when He paid a debt He did not owe. Perfect in every way Jesus willingly went to the Cross to die in our place so that we could go free. The good news of the gospel is not just knowing Jesus Christ paid our debt in full at Calvary’s Cross but better still its knowing we can never ever again go back into debt! Talk about debt relief! Hebrews 7:27 describes it like this, “ (Jesus) who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.”

Jesus Christ really is the gift that keeps on giving! Don’t let the burden of your sin overwhelm you. Bring it all to Jesus this Christmas and give it to Him and walk away debt free, both now and forever just as Colossians 2:14 says, “He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.” Thank you Jesus!

I LOVE YOU!
