Want To Hold Him?

The first time I can remember holding a new born baby in my arms I was in junior high school and my friends mom asked me if I wanted to hold her new born baby girl. I was excited and afraid at the same time and I’ll never forget asking her what turned out to be an embarrassing question. As I clutched the baby close to my chest her eyes were closed and so I asked her mom sitting next to me, “when will she open her eyes” as if she was like my neighbors cat that I had witnessed giving birth and how her kittens didn’t open their eyes for a day or so after being born. She laughed out loud and told me that babies can open their eyes from birth. Man, did I have a lot to learn about babies, and yet what I did know was this baby was adorable.

As I beheld this newborn baby in my arms I got a glimpse of Christmas you might say and what happens when we behold Jesus. The word “behold” in Scripture can mean numerous things, “to see with the eyes, to gaze upon intently, to see with the inner eyes as in a vision, to perceive with knowledge.” I remember vividly studying this baby, completely enamored by her fully developed fingers and toes along with the tiniest finger and toe nails, and I was fascinated that a human being could be so small. Instantly I discovered that the more I beheld her, the more I studied her, the more I adored her. The same thing can be said of Jesus too.

It’s natural to fall in love with a newborn baby, and yet when we behold Jesus, we aren’t just beholding any baby, we are beholding the very Son of God. Jesus, born in the flesh to Joseph and Mary on that first Christmas morning is now born into our hearts by God’s Spirit when we ourselves are born again, accepting the invitation from God to come just as the Christmas song of old sings, “O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem, Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him. O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!” Would you like to hold Him?

I LOVE YOU!
