Our Greatest Need

I like that old saying, “I went to church looking for a friend and found none, so I decided to go to church and be a friend and I made many.” It reminds me of one of the most exciting chapters in all the Bible, Acts chapter 2, the day the church was born. As you read it you can’t help but wish that somehow the church today could know that same joy. The good news is we can!

Love is just a noun until we give our lives away in sacrificial service, then it becomes a verb. The apostle Paul put it like this in Philippians 2:1-4, “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

The book of Acts reveals to us that we can’t help other people without helping ourselves, as when we set our eyes on serving others someone else has their eye on us too! The splendor of the church in the book of Acts is that no one was looking out only for themselves, their primary focus was on the needs of others and in the end everyone had their needs met, they just didn’t know by who. Thats the beauty of being others centered! In the world Jesus said even sinners will help sinners because of what they get in return. In other words wordily people are self centered, who will give to others only to get something back. The servant of God on the other hand loves that they get to give.

It’s been well said, “love isn’t love until we give it away.” We can experience the excitement and the joy just like they did in the church in Acts when the church was born as we gather this week. Just go to church with no stipulations or reservations, knowing your greatest need is met when you understand your greatest need is to give your life away for the benefit of someone else. After all it was Jesus who said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down on one’s life for his friends.”

I LOVE YOU!
