You Can't Just Sit Around

I laugh every time I hear the true story about the guy who tethered helium filled weather balloons to a lawn chair in his back yard and ended up in the airspace above LAX airport at 11,000 feet. A commercial pilot on final approach called in to the tower telling them a guy in a lawn chair with a bb-gun was floating by. The Coastguard was able to get a tow line to him and they brought him safely to the ground where he was immediately arrested. When asked what he was doing he replied, “A guy can’t just sit around and do nothing.”

One of the beauties of humanity is our diversity. Every person is unique, with their own distinct DNA profile that makes us different from every other human being on the planet. Our greatest hindrance to reaching our full potential is the opinions of other people. Thats why the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12;1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

I remember a quote that said, “we are all born originals but most of us die copies of someone else.” I read an article yesterday that blames social media for much of the lack of individuality in society today. The author noted that the majority of people try so hard to get “likes” of their posts that often times they compromise their true beliefs with the hope of being accepted. As I was reading a couple of quotes came to mind, “we spend the first 40 years of our life trying to get others to like us and we spend the next 40 years not caring if they do or not” and “if we knew how little people thought about us we wouldn’t worry so much about what they thought.” The point is, each of us are uniquely, fearfully and wonderfuly made by God and because of that our lives are most fulfilling when we become the person God created us to be and play to an audience of One.

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”

1 Corinthians 10:31
