You Can Walk On Water

If you could do anything for the Lord and you could not fail what would you do? The apostle Peter was a fisherman and spent a lot of time on the water so I am not surprised when he makes what might seem to be a bizarre request. Matthew 14:27-31 tells us about a time Jesus came to His disciples after they had launched their boat while Jesus remained on shore. You can image the conversation going something like this, “Hey Jesus, we are all in the boat, hurry as we are about to shove off.” And then Jesus responding, “you guys go ahead, I’ll catch up to you in a few minutes.” Fast forward and the disciples see someone coming to them walking on the water and immediately they become afraid and as Matthew tells us, “But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Peter sees Jesus walking on water and he knows enough to know walking on water defies gravity so if Jesus really is who He claimed to be Jesus could command Peter to come to Him making it possible for Peter to walk on water too. Jesus gladly obliged saying to Peter, “Come” and Peter gets out of the boat and walks on water. Try to imagine the look on the rest of the disciples faces as Peter makes his way toward Jesus. Nothing is impossible with Jesus, absolutely nothing. Yes, Peter eventually took his eyes off the Lord and he began to sink but we can’t lose sight of the big picture. Nothing is impossible with God. Do you want to do great things for God, do you have a desire to be used greatly of the Lord? If so, you’ve got to give up your comfort and get out of the boat. Who knows, you might just walk on water!
