When God Laughs
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14
If you read your bible carefully you notice that God laughs at times. It’s been said that when the angels of heaven need a good laugh they read commentary. Some of the best shows on television are the ones that just record actual human events. Life is stranger than fiction the old saying goes. As I was listening to a friend of mine at church this past Sunday share a funny story about a missionary journey I couldn’t help but think that God was laughing too.
My friend had been on a missions trip to the midwest following a tornado and one day he found himself going to a local convenience store to get some groceries he noticed a young hispanic man siting on the curb near the door. The kid was obviously hungry and thirsty from the looks of him so my friend struck up a conversation with him to see if he could be of help. The young man said he was hungry so my friend asked what he would like for lunch and then proceeded into the store to get some food for him. When my friend came out he handed the young man some food and beverages that would provide for his lunch and hold him over for a day or so.
As my friend continued to share with the young man Jesus words from Matthew 25:31-40 came to his mind where Jesus said, “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”
Where this story turns funny and why like when a good joke is being told you can’t wait for the punch line my friend laughed out loud as did when what happened next. My friend just after thinking of the Bible verse above asks the young man, “So what’s your name” and the young Hispanic kid says, “Jesus”. Laughing out loud my friend says, “Of course it is, what was I thinking? I should have known your name was Jesus.” I still laugh just thinking about the look that must of been on my friends face and at the thought of our Heavenly Father was watching over this conversation and just waiting for the “punch line” when the young man would say, “my name is Jesus”.
I don’t know for sure if our Heavenly Father laughed out loud that day. I would like to believe He did, but I am certain He took great pleasure in the love and obedience of my friend to show God’s love to that young kid who was hungry and thirsty. Something to think about the next time you cross paths with someone in need. Just think, you might have the opportunity to buy Jesus lunch!
“The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’”
