Life Is In The Blood
Like most students of the Bible I understand to some degree Leviticus 17:14 (NLT) where it says, “The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community.” That passage may sound gross to most as if the Lord is advocating that we should be vegetarians but that is not what He is saying. Long before science was able to reveal to us all the life sustaining components within our bloodstream, the Lord simply told us, “life is in the blood.” The full meaning of “life is in the blood” wouldn’t be made known to us until Jesus came and shed His blood on Calvary’s Cross to atone for our sin.
In Leviticus God was instructing the people on the proper way to prepare animals for sacrifice. The blood was never to be treated as common food. Blood belonged to the Lord, and was to be offered on the altar to Him, the giver of life. The nation of Israel understood that the removal of blood meant a termination of life. Heck, I knew that truth as a young boy. I cut my leg on a piece of glass when I was about 7 years old and as I was bleeding while my parents treated my wound I kept asking my mom, “Am I going to die?”
The Lord took my understanding of “life is in the blood” to a whole new level this past month when I developed a UTI that landed me in the hospital with sepsis, basically, blood poisoning. I had never been that sick before in my life and came to understand how close I actually was to dying due to the extreme infection in my body. As I laid in my bed in the emergency room that first night learning about my condition the very first thing the Lord reminded me of was that life is in the blood. At that point the doctors didn’t know the cause of my infection, they simply knew from a blood sample that my white blood count was through the roof.
I just remember laying there and the Lord comforting me with those simple words, “Life is in the blood” thinking about my own blood being poisoned yet thanking God that the blood of Jesus was not. My comfort then and is today is knowing Jesus sinless perfect blood is what transfuses our very lives. Jesus giving His life for us, shedding His blood atones for our sin, not temporarily like the animal sacrifices we read about in the Old Testament that only reminded the people of their sins each year, but once and for all when He shed His blood for us so we could know we are forgiven and set free. Just like I could feel my physical body coming back to life as the medication began to take effect, the shed blood of Jesus gives us eternal life.
Do you need new life today? Call the doctor! Jesus who is known as the “Great Physician” because there was no illness He could not cure said it best in Luke 5:31-32, “Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” Life is in the blood is true, but knowing eternal life is in Jesus blood is even better! Don’t wait until it’s too late like I nearly did. Call the Doctor today, call upon the name of the Lord and be saved!
“For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer.”
Hebrews 10:4-5 (NLT)
