Higher Education

 
“And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore.”

 

1 Kings 4:29

 
God’s desire is that we pursue a higher education but not the kind we learn in schools these days. In verses 30 through 34 of 1 Kings 4 we read about how much the Lord blessed Solomon. More than all his earthly wealth Solomon had even greater wisdom, more wisdom than any other person on earth. Look at what it says, “Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men–than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.”

I had to laugh when I went back and proofed this passage. I kept thinking, I am sure…how is anyone going to compare the wisdom of Solomon with that of Ethan, Heman, Chalcol, and Darda because nobody will even know who they are. Then, I realized that’s the whole point. Nobody hardly remembers who came in second unless its you! We know from reading our bible that God blessed Solomon with wisdom, and if you remember it was because that is what Solomon asked for from the Lord. He didn’t ask for fame, or fortune, or power, all Solomon wanted was wisdom. And this was way before the famous serenity prayer that so many have come to know. You know the one, “Lord help me to change the things I can, to accept the things I can’t and to know the difference between the two.” Somebody needs to bring that prayer back!

We all need wisdom but not just any old wisdom will do. Realize the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God and the Cross is foolishness to them that are perishing…but to us who are being saved it is the power of God unto salvation. Don’t forget that God’s ways are high above our ways! God doesn’t just give us temporal earthly wisdom as His wisdom is from a much higher source and it comes with an eternal perspective. It’s so sad to watch people make life decisions from such a finite perspective. We need a higher education!

The next time you have a problem, the next time you get into a situation that you don’t know what to do, look to the Lord (first). Seek a higher education! Open up the only book that is going to stand the test of time. The bible tells us that the Lord does not sleep nor slumber. He is available whenever we need help for He is an ever-present help in our times of trouble, day or night. Don’t go it alone, let God help you remembering that He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Wisdom is just a prayer away! Here’s some wisdom that the world will never understand but I pray speaks volumes to your soul as you go about your day. Remember, beloved, “we are never taller than when are on our knees”. That’s heavenly wisdom for sure! If you need wisdom, seek it knowing you will find it when you seek it with all your heart. Seek Jesus, the source of all true wisdom!
