God Wants To Give You The Chills
“Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:11-12
Have you discovered in your relationship with God that He never once has yelled at you? God is not the author of confusion but of peace we read in 1 Corinthians 14:33 and as the writer of Hebrews reminds us in chapter 13 verse 8, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. People yell for a variety of reasons but the number one reason people yell is due to uncontrolled anger and rage. Psychologists give us numerous explanations as to why we raise our voices or yell at others often times is a form of emotional abuse. Maybe the best way to explain yelling in a negative way is by defining yelling as an “emotional shove”. When we yell at others we are emotionally shoving them away, which is the very opposite desire the Lord has for His children and why He does not yell when He speaks to us.
In an article in Psychology Today the author writes, “Please understand that not all yelling is impermissible, (cheering at a sporting event, warning someone of impending harm are just two positive forms) but yelling to belittle, to disparage, to minimize, or to correct, should always be unacceptable. As a clinician, I have no reservation in saying that yelling is one of the most egregious forms of rage. Rage occurs when we are uncontrollable, unmanageable, and an acting aggressively. We choose to use rage, when we have no other known alternatives.”
The enemy of our soul uses fear and intimidation to tempt us to disobey the Lord. As a matter of fact you could say yelling is one of his favorite techniques as 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” The book of Proverbs puts it another way, “Like a roaring lion and a charging bear is a wicked ruler over poor people (Proverbs 28:15).
The Lord on the other hand whispers when He speaks as there is nothing like a whisper to capture and hold someones attention. Psychologists tell us that when we hear whispering something happens in our brains called, “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response” or commonly known as “brain tingles”. If you have ever heard a song begin to play and you got the chills you have already enjoyed the response. The Lord could use any method He so chooses in speaking to us. He doesn’t owe us an explanation for anything He does and yet all through the Bible we find the answer as to why God always chooses to whisper to us when He speaks. May the reminder as to why the Lord whispers cause chills from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet today. God whispers for one reason and one reason only when He speaks to you. It’s because He is always near, right there by your side.
“And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."
John 17:26
