Perfect In Any Light

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 1:29

I remember sitting next to my wife on our sofa watching one of the plethora of home improvement shows on television when we both noticed our own renovation project that was under way didn't look right. The miter cut on our window sill was uneven and it stood out due to the dim lighting in our living room. We had not noticed it before as the bright light of day didn’t expose it. It took the indirect light at night to bring the flaw to our attention.

As I stood there looking at the window sill the Lord quickened something to my mind as if to say, “Now you know why inspecting the sacrifice in different lights was required” as it was critically important to inspect the sacrifice in different types of light to ensure there was no blemish. I stood in awe for a few seconds as I considered that truth. I have never had to make an animal sacrifice or inspect an animal for five days to ensure it is without spot or blemish because Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the earth was inspected throughly during six separate trials and was found as the Bible recounts the words of Pilate in Luke 23:4, “So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no fault in this Man" making His sacrifice upon Calvary’s Cross sufficient once and for all. Before going to the Cross Jesus was throughly inspected and no fault was found in him. He was and still is perfect in all His ways!

I don’t know if you are aware or not from reading Exodus 12:2-6 that there were five days that pass allowing for the sacrifice to be throughly inspected in the early morning light as well as the noon day light and finally at twilight. The painstaking care in inspecting the sacrifice was symbolic so as to point us to the Perfect sacrifice that Jesus would one day make when He would offer Himself up as the Lamb of God, slain for the forgiveness of my sins and yours. As I stood there in my living room that night I had this awareness and new appreciation for the process involved in inspecting things in different lights, and more important, just how perfect Jesus is.

As I stood there I thought could you and I stand up to that kind of scrutiny? I couldn’t that is for sure. If someone followed us around for five days straight would they find perfection? Would my life and your life be integrated as the word perfect is defined? Would our talk match our walk? Is what is going on on the inside consistent with what’s happening on the outside of our lives? After all isn’t that the call of Matthew 5:48, “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” The good news of the gospel today is Jesus is perfect, we are not. The One who came to give His life as a ransom passed the test for us, demonstrating that Jesus was the only one in human history capable of being the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. No one else qualifies, no one else comes even close. Like the song declares, “Oh what a Savior…”

Praise God today that no matter what light you examine Jesus in, He remains perfect in all His ways! There is none like Him. Jesus is our Good Shepherd our perfect Savior worthy of all our praise.

“And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,”

Hebrews 5:9

I LOVE YOU!
