The Cure For Depression
"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Matthew 11:29-30
Looking for the lyrics to some songs for Easter I came across what appeared to be a high school age girl who had created a music video years ago as a school project. The video was about depression and her reason for doing her project on depression was that she has dealt with it her whole life and as she put it, depression had ruined her life.
The quote said, "Depression is nourished by a lifetime of un-grieved and unforgiven hurts" and the sad thing is if that is true, most cases of depression can be treated and in many cases, if not all, cured. That brings to mind a quote from a Mental Health professional who said that if everyone in a Mental Hospital could truly believe that they could be fully forgiven and truly loved, over 90% would be able to go home. My point is this, the key to mental health in many cases is learning to grieve thoroughly and to grant and receive forgiveness completely. The Good News of the gospel is that is exactly what Jesus Christ came to do. To forgive us so we could forgive ourselves and others and to help us learn to grieve our loses in healthier ways.
Remember, loved one, Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly. Jesus is the key to mental health. Pour out your heart to Him and allow Jesus to reveal God’s love to you. Don’t let depression get you down, let life’s disappointments cause you to look up. It was Corrie Ten Boon who once said, "When I look around I get confused, when I look down I get depressed, but when I look up my hearts at rest." Today, I’m praying you look up! Here’s a little poem I have on my computer to remind me of what God did and didn't promise us. I pray it helps you to put life into perspective. It goes like this…
"God never promised a life without pain, laughter without tears, or sun without rain. But He did promise, strength for the day, comfort for tears and light for the way. And for all who believe in Jesus Christ, enthroned above, rewards for their faith, and His everlasting love."
"casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
