The Truth; The Whole Truth; And Nothing But The Truth
“The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.”
Psalm 119:160
There is an old saying, “If there is one thing we have learned from history it’s that we have learned nothing from history.” When you watch the news (any channel) and you read what is happening in our country to our moral fiber you would think we were back to living like the people that we read about in the Old Testament book of Judges. In Isaiah 5:20 it says that evil had become so common that it was taking place right out in the open. Immorality was so common place that the prophet Isaiah declared, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” It’s been well said, “A lie can make its way around the world before truth even has a chance to put its shoes on”.
As we consider what is happening in the world today the words of Booker T. Washington come to mind, “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right and evil doesn’t become good just because it’s accepted by the majority” as do the words of Ben Shapiro who is quoted as saying, “There is no such thing as ‘your truth’. There is the truth and your opinion.” Our only safeguard against the lies being perpetrated by society is a renewed commitment to the truth. Not my truth or your truth but “the truth” of God which is the only true truth. Every other so called kind of truth is subject to change without notice. Regardless of what anyone says there are such things as absolutes and biblical truth is one of them.
Heres a good working definition of truth for you, “Truth is that which is constant and unchangeable, something on which someone can rely, which will prove to be true in the future”. My personal favorite definition regarding truth is, “Truth is good for all people, all places and all times.” Consider these words that convey the core meaning of Biblical truth, “unchangeable” and “reliability”, “faithfulness,” “constancy,” and “dependability”. I don’t know about you but I am happy knowing at least one thing in this world never changes. Truth never changes!
In John 18:37 when Jesus tells Pontius Pilate that He has come into the world to “bear witness to the truth” you will notice that Jesus says, “the truth,” not just “a truth” or any old kind of truth. Jesus goes on to say in John 18:37, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice”. Again, Jesus uses the words, “the truth,” not “a truth” as if some how His teachings were just another option out there for people to consider. No, even Jesus adversaries recognized that Jesus taught with authority because “the truth” He taught was definite, not vague. Jesus Christ came into this world to proclaim and confirm “the truth” to those who are seeking for “the truth”.
In John 18:38 Pilate responds to Jesus, “What is truth?” Pilates response is as if to say, “what is absolute truth?” The answer to Pilate and anyone who is seeking truth is, the word of God is absolute truth. The Bible is 100% completely dependable for the simple fact that biblical truth is inseparably linked to the dependable, unchanging character of God. We can trust everything God says because He never lies; God always keeps His Word; as He is faithful to each and every one of His promises.
Get in the word of God, and let the word of God get into you because when we do Jesus said something amazing would happen. Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “… If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
“Sanctify them by the truth, Your Word is truth”
John 17:17
