What's The Score?

“Judge  not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Matthew 7:1–2

In most athletic contests the goal is to outscore your opponent and yet when it comes to winning at life keeping score is what losers do not winners. I heard a quote the other day while driving that expresses the point I am hoping to make, “People who don’t offer grace are those who are still keeping score.” The goal of the life of every believer should be to finish in a tie. The apostle Paul put it like this when he wrote in Romans 13:8, “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.”

Are you keeping score or are you offering grace? Aren’t you glad that Jesus doesn’t keep score? Not only does He not keep score, Colossians 2:14 reminds us, “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Every sin you and I had ever committed or would ever commit Jesus took and nailed them to the Cross.

Your slate and mine are clean today because of God’s grace. 2 Corinthians 5:21 captures the thought best, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Why you might be thinking would God do that for us. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV) because, “love keeps no record of wrongs” and the apostle John who came to be affectionately known as the ‘apostle of love’ puts it all together for us in plain language when he writes in 1 John 4:8, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Keep this in mind as you go about your day today. We are never more like God than when we forgive and never more like the devil when we don’t. Don’t be a score keeper, just remember…

“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins”

1 Peter 4:8.

I LOVE YOU!
