Love Wins!

“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”

Galatians 5:14

It’s still early into a new year and those of us who made resolutions are already experiencing in the words of the old Wide World of Sports jingle, “The thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.” No one likes to fail but failure is found in the DNA of a fallen world. Only God is perfect in all His ways and yet God has made it possible for us to enjoy His perfection each and every time we love.

The apostle Paul writes about love in 1 Corinthians 13 and he reminds the church that is experiencing failure on a number of fronts that, “love never fails”. We might set goals this year that we reach while some fall short of our intended result but there is one sure way each of us can increase our daily success and that is to choose love. Think about it, love never fails. We can’t fail when we love but we can fail if we do not love.

If loving is your goal for 2021 you can’t fail unless you fail to love and the good news is, love is a choice not result. Love is the means to the end and not the other way around as the apostle Paul makes clear in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.”

When setting goals for 2021 run them through the filter of love. Keep in mind what love doesn’t do as well as what love does do. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 goes on to remind us, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Don’t forget, you can’t fail when you choose to love because…

“Love never fails.”
