Keep Rolling!

“casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you”

1 Peter 5:7

The Greek word for “casting” is epirrhipto which means to “roll over” which is a very interesting word when you consider the context here in 1 Peter 5. The apostle Peter is exhorting all believers to “roll over” all their cares upon Jesus because He cares for you. Most all who have ever studied this text or sat in a bible study listening to the teacher explain the text get this idea of God inviting us to bring all of our cares to Him and leaving them with Him never to have to worry about them again. I like that explanation but to be honest its never really happened for me and I would be willing to guess I doubt it has for some of you.

Like me, you bring your cares to Jesus and you go away about your business only to discover them right back where they were the next day or so. At first glance you become frustrated that the care you had is back at all, and then you begin to think that God doesn’t care about you since the care you gave Him, He has given back to you. Obviously there is a reason your care has returned to you, but it’s not what you think. God isn’t against you and He does care about you, more than you will ever know. The reason your care is back is because God does care.

You recall the Greek word, “epirrhipto” which means to “roll over”. Just know something that rolls one way can and often times rolls back and that is what God does often times with our cares. We roll them over to God and then at some time in the future, God rolls them right back to us so that we can roll them back to Him once again. Why would God roll our cares back to us you might be thinking? The answer is simple. Our cares keep bringing us back to God. Think about it. If every time we had a care and we brought it to God and that was it, we wouldn’t develop a relationship with Him, we would just use God to get what we wanted never understanding what He desired all along.

God doesn’t want you and me to come to Him only when we have a care, He wants us to enjoy Him at all times. More than anything God wants a relationship with us and cares have a way of helping us express how we really think and what we truly feel. Cares have a way of drawing us close to God and becoming more dependent upon Him. Thats the lesson God wants us to learn when we have a care. Cares you could say have a way of teaching us who really cares. God loves you and He cares for you. So, the next time the cares of this world get you down, roll them over to Jesus knowing He cares about you. And when those cares come back just remember that cares roll in both direction. You bring you cares to God knowing He cares for you and God rolls your cares back to remind you that He cares for you and is there waiting for you to return and draw close to Him. Remember, cares teach us who really cares.
