We Exist To Appreciate

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Colossians 1:16

Thanksgiving to the believer is in many ways just another Thursday as giving thanks is something all of humanity was created to do. Thanking God is like the apostle Paul said in Romans 12:1, “… is your reasonable service” as its only natural when you consider all that He has done for us. Yet, we recognize the struggle that exists in each of our hearts, the failure to be satisfied in God. Sadly, because of the Fall of Adam and Eve there is something in us, namely sin that hungers for more. Being thankful is the antidote for our unsatisfied soul. Gratitude is what reverses the curse. We see it all through the Bible. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 comes to mind, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

I think thats why so many people enjoy Thanksgiving Day so much. It’s an opportunity for us to experience the very reason we were created. We get to bring glory and honor to God by being grateful. Looking back and seeing the faithfulness of God and counting the many blessings He has bestowed upon us is what makes Thanksgiving so satisfying.

Today as you gather around the table don’t limit your thanksgiving to what you see, thank God for what you don’t see. It’s easy to thank God for the temporal blessings that we see all around us. But what about the spiritual blessings, the eternal things that we cant see with our human eyes that when you really think about it are far greater in number than any physical blessing we might enjoy. Isn’t that what the apostle Paul was writing about in Ephesians 1:3, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”

The point is, if you and I recognized all the ways God has blessed our lives and we spent the day counting our blessings, we wouldn’t have time to eat. That’s how good God is, all the time! Yet, eat God calls us to do, and enjoy all that we eat as we thank Him on this Thanksgiving Day!

“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD’

Psalm 150:6
