The Blessing
“The Blessing”
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.”
Psalm 23:5-6
This week many families around the country will gather together to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal and one of the first things they will do is say, “the blessing”. By definition the word blessing means, “The act or words of a person who blesses. The invoking of God's favor upon a person.” All blessings originate from God Himself who we read in Numbers 6:22-27 proclaims a blessing over the nation of Israel. It says, “And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” ’“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”
There is no question in the world today that God has blessed the nation of Israel and even though this tiny country is surrounded by hostile neighbors, the nation still prospers. How and why you might ask? Simply because God said so when He proclaimed His blessing upon them. There is power in a blessing and as God’s Word declares in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Make the most of this holiday season. Don’t wait for Thanksgiving Day to speak words of blessing and to invoke God’s favor on others.
It was Mark Twain who once said, “I can go three months on one good compliment.” It’s true, there is power in our words, death and life are in the power of our tongue. And just think, the power of God’s word is still in effect on the nation of Israel thousands of years later. All the more reason to speak God’s Word to people when proclaiming a blessing over them for He alone is faithful. Here are a just a few of my favorite blessings you can receive for yourself and proclaim on others this Thanksgiving week.
Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
Ephesians 1:3, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”
Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus..”
Philippians 2:13, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
