Making A Difference

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.”

Romans 12:6-8

The story goes like this. “There once was a young boy walking along the sea shore one morning as the tide was going out. The boy came across dozens and dozens of star fish that were stranded on the rocks. Not wanting them to perish in the sun he began picking them up one by one and tossing them back into the ocean. There was an elderly man fishing near by who saw what the boy was doing and he turned and yelled to the young lad, “Give it up kid, there are too many. You aren’t going to make a difference.” Undaunted by what the old man had said, the boy reached down and picked up another star fish and showed to the man and said, “I’m making a difference for this one” as he smiled and chucked the star fish into the sea.”

Considering all the needs brought about by a global pandemic can be overwhelming until you realize you are just one person. Nobody can serve everybody, but everybody can serve somebody. We do well to remember that God has given each of His children spiritual gifts that when we exercise them, they work for the building up of the body of Christ in love. There is nothing more satisfying in this life than the feeling you get when we serve the Lord by using our gifts to serve others sacrificially. The apostle Paul uses the human body in 1 Corinthians 12 to remind us that each of us has a specific task, a unique roll within the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:7 tells us, “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”

You can make a difference today, loved one, as you allow the Holy Spirit to make known to you the gifts of God and then to connect you with other members in the body of Christ in serving the needs of others. Discover your God given spiritual gifts and you’ll discover the reason you are here on this planet. Discover your calling and walk in it and watch your life take on a whole new meaning and a sense of purpose each day.

“but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”

Ephesians 4:15-16
