There Are No Shelves In Heaven

“I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me.”

Psalm 57:2

I watched with interest the Celebration of Life for basketball legend Kobe Bryant. He was more than one of the most dominant basketball players in NBA history. He was a husband, a father, a business owner, an artist, a coach, and a host of other titles. To say he was gifted is an understatement. Though he died young there is no question that he lived a full life. It was said by many who knew him well and spoke at his life’s celebration that whatever Kobe did in this life he did with all his heart. If he did anything he did it with everything he had. He had an impeccable work ethic as he was driven not just to do his best, he wanted to be the best. His life serves as a great motivation for everyone who has heard his story about the value of hard work and its benefits.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows what they want to do with the rest of their lives when they are a child or even as an adult. And if they did know when they were young, most either grow up to find another career path or get disheartened at some point down the road while pursuing their lifelong dream only to settle for something else, something less. That brings up a question. Have you ever laid in bed and in the stillness of the dark asked yourself the question, “why am I here?” or phrased the question more like, “what’s the purpose of my life?” Many people at some point in their lives ask and is all the more reason why we need to understand that God has a plan for each of our lives.

Unlike the business world, God doesn’t have a retirement age in serving Him, as His plan is good for our entire lives, not just a portion of our lives. There are no shelves in heaven, loved one. God doesn’t just use us then put us on a shelf to collect dust. The apostle Paul put it like this in Romans 11:29, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” God is perfect in all His ways, He doesn’t make mistakes. You aren’t a mistake and yes, God’s plan includes you! I read a quote yesterday that captures my thought, “Two most important days of your life are when you were born and when you discovered why.”

Keep this in mind today, loved one. May it help shape the course of your day and to keep life in its proper perspective. Discerning God’s calling for each of our lives is more about a relationship than it is a route, more about the journey than the destination. God’s plan has to do with more about who you are becoming than where you are going, and maybe, just maybe it’s less about what you do and more about how well you do whatever you do. That’s the message I believe the Lord was speaking to the audience who were in attendance at the Kobe Bryant “Celebration of Life” and I believe its what He is speaking to you and me today.

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31

I LOVE YOU!
