When Longer Isn't Long Enough
“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.”
Psalm 84:10
The sweet psalmist of Israel, King David, the man who loved and sought after God’s heart knew, better is one day in the court of the King than a thousand elsewhere. For many this kind of love is hard to imagine. To love God that much seems impossible unless you have ever loved another person and loved them to the point that to you want to be with them every waking moment of each and every day. If you have, then you will understand David’s heart expressed here in Psalm 84 with regards to his relationship with God.
David knew you couldn’t just be with God for a day and be satisfied. Here's a paradox. Jesus satisfies and yet He always leaves you wanting more of Him. And one day soon we will be satisfied, beloved. Anyone who has ever been in love knows you can’t just be with the one you truly love for just a day and be satisfied, it just wouldn't be enough. God didn’t wire us for just a moment of love, no matter what we say to convince ourselves. We were created with a longing to be together forever and guess what? We can be.
Eternity is a long time and that’s why the bible says don’t be unequally yoked to non-believers. The pain of being relationally disconnected can be more painful than having a bone out of joint. In Jesus we never have to say goodbye, we’ll never have to wish for one more day, or one more hour because we will have forever to be together. You don’t have to wait either, loved one. Eternity starts now, it begins the moment we opened the door of our heart to Jesus! Sure, we aren’t married in heaven to one another, as all believers are married as unto the Lord but we do get to be there together, and forever. We’ll know each other and we’ll know the Lord and we will never be apart.
What David is simply saying in a poetic way in the psalm is, you’d give anything just to be with Jesus even if it was only for a day, because nothing compares to Him. But, the Good News is, friend, we get to be with Jesus forever! We, meaning "we" get to be together too! That's exciting to get to share eternity together. Nothing can compare to the glory that shall be revealed in us on that day, so keep holding onto Jesus, keep trusting in Him, loved one, and in the end you and I will discover the day will turn into a week and the weeks into months and the months into years and the years into eternity. It’s just one day at a time one hour at a time, and I love the thought of being with you forever.
One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.
