Dig Deep
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
Deuteronomy 6:5
We have a broken water main at the church today and as I type there are a couple of guys digging a deep hole in the ground to reach the source. The word “deep” is on my brain this morning as the guys spent about 5 hours digging a large hole by hand but we have leaned it needs to be much deeper and wider and the only solution may be to bring in a backhoe to get the job done.
Pondering the word “deep” I am reminded afresh today that there is no way to plum the depth of God’s love as the famous hymn titled, “Deep and Wide is sung,
“Deep and wide
Deep and wide
There's a fountain flowing deep and wide
And it's coming from the heart of God
There's a fountain flowing deep and wide”
My online dictionary says of the word “deep”, Deep (adj).
extending from the surface downward or inward
extending a long way from top to bottom
extending a long way from front to back
extending a long way from a surface or boundary inward
standing or lining up in rows of a particular number
relatively far down, in, or inside something
coming from or reaching down inside the body
My favorite description was number 10 on the list of descriptions which said, “deep” as an adjective, “intensely held, kept, or experienced.” That was good but it even got better, or deeper as I read the description for the word “deep” as a noun. It gave the following definition, “The middle or most intense part of something.”
God isn’t into half-hearted love because half hearted love leaves us empty, never satisfied. God loves us deep and He calls us to deep love too. That’s why Jesus said in Mark 12:29-31, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Today, determine to love deep and wide and don’t hold back. Ask God to help you love Him and others from the deepest place of your soul, from the source and not the surface for the simple fact…
