Shine

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14-16

I have had a fascination with flashlights since I was a little boy that has not diminished with age, the brighter the flashlight the better. It’s amazing to me how technology has advanced through the years, from the giant D to the tiny yet powerful lithium battery. To think you can have a flashlight that fits in the palm of your hand that can illuminate an object over a thousand yards away. I get chills jut thinking about it. Now you can even buy a laser light that can actually cook an egg. Man has done much with nothing more than extremely focused light.

Imagine what God can do with a man or woman who is living for His glory, who has placed their life in His hands. The size of the flashlight has little to do with its brightness. The power a flashlight puts out is determined by the power that lies within which is great news for those who have placed their hope and trust in Jesus. Two verses immediately come to mind, 1 John 4:4, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” If you and I fully knew the power that is in us we’d never worry about the darkness again! How about Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." When Jesus Christ’s comes into the life of a child of God by the Spirit of God the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead becomes our own power source too.

Never again do we have to worry about our light going out, or not having enough power to provide the lumen’s needed to see what’s in front of us as we journey through life. The reason being is the light is not something we are responsible for generating as 1 John 1:5 tells us why, “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” John 1:4-9 reminds us too, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.”

Remember loved one, the light we shine is a gift from God and the closer we walk with Jesus the stronger our light becomes and no amount of darkness can extinguish it. As a matter of fact, the darker the world becomes the greater our light shines!

“For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

John 3:20-21
