Whose Side Are You On?

“When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?” “Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the LORD’s army.”

Joshua 5:13–14

Whenever there is conflict between two people the natural tendency is to choose sides. As Christians we can be the most guilty of thinking God is on our side when we find ourselves in the middle of a fight when in fact, most likely He is not. My point is this. More important than God being on our side is are we on God’s side? Thats the lesson Joshua learned quickly here in the book that bears his name. As Joshua was about to go to battle in Jericho he came upon a man with his sword drawn and asked, “Are you for us or against us?”  But the Lord simply answered, “No,” for the issue wasn’t whose side the Lord was on. It was whose side is Joshua was on.

Whose side are you on is the most important question we can ask ourselves each and every day. As we pray, “Your will be done” we are praying and asking God to help us align ourselves to Him and with Him. The worst thing we can do each day is to seek God in hopes He will bless our plans. That is so short sighted when we do that. You have probably heard the expression, “Be careful what ladder you climb in life for you might just reach the top only to discover your ladder was leaning against the wrong building.”

Joshua chapter 5 is a great reminder to seek the Lord and to want His ways, His will over our own. Every time I read the book of Joshua I am encouraged to seek the Lord more and to set out to walk in His ways and not my own. Not only does the battle belong to the Lord, the victory is His too! The world is constantly pulling us to do our own thing and to go our own way. The goal of life isn’t to get people on our side but to make sure each and every day we are on His side!

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Proverbs 3:5–6
