How To Make Good Decisions

"We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith"

Hebrews 12:2

How do you make good decisions? That’s a great question and I like what Mark Twain once said, “Good decisions come from experience and experience comes from making bad decisions.” I don’t know about you but I have a lot of experience in making bad decisions. I heard something years ago that has stuck with me. It went like this, “The Lord gives the test first and the lesson later.” It’s how we learn to trust God. Though you and I are free to make choices today, what we can’t do is choose the outcome of our choices. That’s up to the Lord and is where faith and hope and trust come in on our part.

The Bible teaches us that there are three things that constantly seek to trip us up every time we need to make a decision about anything in this life. They are the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 1 John 2:16-17 states, “For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.”

So, how can we make choices today that please the Lord. Always seek to make decisions on what you value most not what you want most for the simple fact, rarely if ever is what you want the most at the moment the same as to what you value most. Jesus put it like this in Matthew 6:33 to, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Look to God, look to His Word and keep Jesus between you and everything else.

Believers live with delayed gratification in mind knowing, “our benefit package is out of this world”. Always keep this in mind, “Those that do the most good in this life are focused on the next.” C.S. Lewis put it like this, “Aim at earth and you get nothing. Aim at heaven and you get the earth thrown in.” The more we focus on heaven today the better the decisions we will make.

“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth”

Colossians 3:2
