A Place To Hide

“And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.”

1 Samuel 22:2

I don’t know about you but I can relate to the story found in 1 Samuel 22. I can’t tell you how many times I have felt like a misfit in the cave of life just looking for a safe place to hide out… me and about 399 other misfits too! Guess what, what we found turned out to be unlike anything we thought or imagined the cave would be! I have enjoyed what the different commentaries I have read have had to say about 1 Samuel, to come to know that God has created a safe place where the misfits of this life can go brings so much comfort to my heart. There really is a safe place for the stressed, the distressed, discontented can go to find solitude in this life. It’s not where you might think though. A dark cave isn’t the place to find safety, no, safety is found in the light of our loving Savior, in Jesus. The cave didn’t provide the comfort the people sought, King David did. David is a type of Christ here in 1 Samuel 22 and the cave isn’t the place of comfort, the One who meets us in the cave is our source of comfort, the one who provides us peace.

The Lord is our hiding place, and those who are distressed and discontented in this life are invited to find our comfort and rest in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” There’s room in the cave, loved one, as Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Let David’s life be an encouragement to you today. David is a type of Christ in this story when he took 400 misfits and transformed them into mighty men of valor! If David, a mere man can do that with his misfits just think of what Jesus can do with you and me if we will sit under His leadership and give Him charge over our lives! Consider this quote I read yesterday, “You are not defined by your worst moments. You are not defined by your greatest accomplishments. You are not defined by what others think of you OR what you think about yourself. You are not defined by what you do or fail to do. You are defined by what God has done for you.”

Make Jesus the Lord of your life and watch how your life will change. Make Him King over your heart and soul and watch how as you listen and learn and follow Him, the cares and distresses of this life give way to meaning and purpose. Don’t follow a man, follow the Lord! Stay close to Jesus and experience first hand, the love and the care that He takes in making and molding you. Reading what David does in the life of his mighty men reminds me of that old saying, “I am not what I once was and I am not what I shall be”. Our greater than David, our King Jesus is working in us to make us His mighty men and women of valor too.

“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

1 John 3:2

I LOVE YOU!
