Title: Walk Don’t Run

1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Paul knows we are prone to be tangled in legalism

We sometimes add a few good works to feel on the safe side regarding our relationship with the Lord. Performance based faith is like running on a treadmill. It not only will eventually wear you out, but it takes you nowhere fast…

We are commanded to not go back…

To not trust in Jesus alone for the forgiveness of my sin Christ will profit me nothing

The law and Christ do not mix…. Like oil and water…

2  Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.

3  And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law.

4  You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

If you honor a part you must honor them all, regarding the law

Its worse than be sincerely wrong. (Our righteousness is like a filthy rag to God)

Don’t insult God.

5  For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

6  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

The definition of Holiness is Christ. We know righteousness comes to us by faith.

circumcision avails nothing in becoming like Christ.

We do strive to be like Christ each day as we learn how to surrender to His will. Our effort is about letting go and letting God.

Paul is saying that all the law and the prophets is fulfilled in loving God and loving our fellow man.

7  You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

Who hindered you from obeying the truth? Paul is saying you couldn’t become what you have become by simply reading the Bible. Somebody tricked you.

Don’t listen to anyone who has a message other than Jesus + nothing = salvation

8  This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.

9  A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

A little leaven leavens the whole loaf of bread… it corrupts, it infiltrates

Legalism is not content with just a part. It won’t be satisfied until it dominates you

Legalism seeks to spoil the work of God.

10  I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.

I have confidence in them as He has faith in the Lord

Whoever it is who troubles you… God will judge them

James, those who teach will incurs a stricter judgment.

11  And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased.

The Cross is offenses to legalist because they seek to be justified by something they are doing or something they have done in the past.

Some accused people of teaching the law… Paul said if that was so why am I being persecuted.

Legalism is a self righteous person. I am going to heaven because I have done this… I have done this…I’m in on the basis of my goodness. The Cross is an offense to the self righteous person because the Cross says there is only one way to heaven and thats through Jesus Christ. The Cross is an offense to someone who is perishing.

Once the law has done its job we become dissatisfied with ourselves and offers us one way to be saved and we jump at the chance to be saved because we are fully aware of how wicked we are.

Paul’s letter to the Philippians reveals to us how worthless the works of our flesh are and how they profit us nothing with regard to eternity.

12  I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!

Why stop with circumcision when you can prove your spirituality by castration. If the law is your logic. Pauls hope is that they would be cut off so they could not be fruitful.

Is a Christian who is not under the law practicing lawlessness? Legalist add to the scripture to control peoples lives.

I titled this mornings message “Walk Don’t Run” because when we experience God’s grace we quit striving to keep the law and start walking with Jesus instead trusting in His perfect righteousness to gain our access to God and heaven.

Galatians is all about Grace. Amazing grace! you can’t add to it you can’t take away from it

God does not love you more on your best day or less on your worst day

Gods Riches At Christs Expense

One Way Love

Grace sees you through

The book of Galatians is easily broken up into 3 parts

1. Personal

2. Doctrinal

3. Application

Last week we read what not to do... don’t get circumcised to get saved

4 chapters of personal, doctrine and now the application

Galatians Ends with the practical application

We all need application and the Bible gives it to us

The application is, What to do with grace?

13  For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

For 4 chapters now Paul has stressed the importance of liberty. But Paul realized he could be misunderstood.

Being misunderstood…Here are some newspaper headlines that run the risk of being misunderstood.

"Police begin campaign to run down jaywalkers."

"Iraqi head seeks arms."

"Astronaut takes blame for gas in spacecraft."

"Local High School dropouts cut in half."

"Man minus ear waives hearing."

Paul doesn’t want to be misunderstood.

Don’t use your liberty but in love and serve one another.

Verse 13: Don’t use your liberty for an opportunity for the flesh. If you let your flesh control your liberty you will end back up in bondage.

If you let your flesh rule your liberty you will eventually end back in bondage

Freedom can be abused. In trying to protect people from themselves we put them in bondage.

We have freedom with grace, but don’t let your flesh rule your freedom

What you do with your freedom can land in you bondage

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should

Only when you can do whatever you want are you ever able to do what the Spirit wants

Grace that cannot be abused is not grace

Freedom that cant be misused is not truly freedom

With power comes responsibility

Legalism seeks to keep you

You have the power to mess myself up

You are more dangerous to yourself than the devil is

1 Corinthians 6,  “All things are lawful but not all things are profitable.”

You are your own worst enemy.

The devil can tempt you but only you can decide to sin. The devil cant make you do it.

Jesus temptation in the wilderness. Turn, throw, bow down… Jesus could have but He didn’t.

Romans 8:2, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”

We don’t follow the laws of Moses or the laws of men. We follow the law of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes into our lives and He becomes a law unto Himself. A living law that provides conviction in our heart. You couldn’t write a bible big enough to cover all the issues of life. God gives us His Word then puts His Spirit in us. The Spirit sounds like the Word of God.

The Holy Spirit provides both the desire and the will along with the power to do the will of God.

The law sets the standard but doesn’t give one the power to fulfill the law. The law was given to convict us.

Because of the law of the Spirit I assume your motivation to be like Christ. We don’t have to, we want to obey Jesus.

Don’t use the liberty to sin but use your liberty to love your neighbor as yourself.

You might say Paul is exhorting Christians to find balance in our lives, the sweet spot

The importance of balance…

Our body was created with balance in mind.

Balance the way the body works… two eyes, two ears, two feet,

Moderation in everything even in moderation

The need for balance in our life

We want to live… quality of life.

We want to live long lives but do you want to eat cardboard tasting food to do so. No, so people eat things that aren’t necessarily good for them.

14  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Verse 14: Love others as much as you love yourself

Love fulfills the law... love God and all the other laws fall into place

Love... is what we need… love fulfills the law.

love doesn’t... list works of the flesh

Eugene Peterson... on verse 14. “Everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence, “Love others as you love yourself.” That is an act of true freedom.”

Loving ourselves gets us in trouble, loving others helps us find the meaning of life.

We don’t need regulations We need a revelation

Legalism is self consuming, it turns us inward trying to reach some unreachable standard.

The Spirit takes our focus off ourselves and helps us focus on each other

15  But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!

If you bite and devour one another you will get eaten up by it. It will consume you.

Legalist write laws that resemble themselves.

Critical spirit that bites and devours one another.

16  I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

The “lust of the flesh” is a biblical name for “selfish desires.”

If we listen to the Holy Spirit and obey Him and we will walk in holiness and liberty.

17  For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Before Christ we had one nature, a self serving nature. When we got saved we received a new nature, the nature of Christ. There is a battle each day, a war for our heat and soul.

One day this body will be put to death…

Conquering sin isn’t about trying harder... it’s about submitting to God. Dying to self sets us free.

18  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Let the peace of God rule your heart and sin is defeated. Let the Word of God saturate your heart.

Our job is to stay close to Jesus. To allow Jesus to do His work in you.

The Word of God purifies us… Abide in Jesus…

Fruit isn’t forced, its a by product

Jesus take the wheel…

If you are led by the Spirit. If you want to master the flesh walk in the Spirit.

A list of works

Verses 19-21… A list of problems we don’t have but feel sorry for people who do.

The flesh is self-centered. The fruit is Spirit-inspired.

19  Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness (Pornography), lewdness, (I will sin openly whether you like it or not).

20  idolatry, sorcery (pharmacia), hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21  envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries (partying), and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Those who practice such things… a lifestyle of practice to perfect… “Where your treasure is your heart be also”

It means when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives we aren’t the same.

If a person slips into sin they cant wait to get out of it.

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Fruit… fruit is a relationship word.

The Holy Spirit produces this in the life of the believer.

John 15… as we abide in Christ love comes out.

John 15:1-12

1  "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

2  Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

4  Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

5  I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

6  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

8  By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

9  "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.

10  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

11  These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

12  This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Long-suffering… patient with people

Faithfulness to God. To stay in the place He has placed us.

23  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

No joy in legalism…

Notice these nine manifestations or fruit are in three groups of three.

Group #1 flows from our relationship with God... love, joy, peace.

Group #2 effects our relationships with one another... longsuffering, kindness, goodness.

Group #3 involves our relationship with ourselves... faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

24  And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

We crucify the flesh… We live in the Spirit we walk in the Spirit.

Verse 24 crucified the flesh... the flesh’s control has been broken at the Cross

Sin remains but it no longer reigns

You have the capacity to sin... but sin no longer controls you! Now its a choice.

Romans 6 “Recken the old man dead…”

The most pathetic of fellows is the person who's in Christ - wants to please God - but is trying to do it in his own strength.

We need to recall that as Christians we’ve “crucified the flesh.” We committed to stop trusting in our own efforts, and live our lives depending on the Holy Spirit.

Too many believers though they are Christians, saved by grace, but they live as if they’re not. They trust in their own strength. This is why Paul tells us, verse 25…

25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

What began in grace is kept by grace as it continues in grace

We often struggle because we try to run instead of walking…

Paul could have said anything… Ride a donkey, ride a horse, take a chariot, take a ship…

Get your eyes on Jesus

26  Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

God wants better for us!

Don’t become conceited

Dont provoke those who aren’t keeping all the rules

Dont envy. Envy is the natural outcome of legalism.
