Title: “Is This All There Is?”

Text:

I am excited about this morning as I truly believe God has something to say today… God has a message for you.

As I was praying about this morning I felt like the Lord wanted me to ask you a couple of questions.

First, are you living your life in light of eternity?

All through scripture we are taught we are all only here for a very short period of time regardless of how many years you enjoy life.

The Second question is just as important as the first.  Is what I am doing in my life today going matter 100 years from now…

Are there signs of the super natural in your life or is your life not that super nor is natural.

Believe it or not the Christian life is an exciting way to live, its truly the only way of life that is life giving.

The closer your walk is to Jesus, the more exciting your life is to become.

Jesus has called us to follow Him.

In Matthew 4:19  Jesus said, “follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men.”

The big question today is how close are we to Him?

In Matthew 8:22 Jesus said to one who was reluctant to follow at Jesus invitation, “let the dead bury the dead.”

Do you want your life to count? Do you really want to make a difference in this world?

Matthew 16:24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

Pray this radical prayer with me today…

God, I’ll go anywhere you want me to go, I’ll do whatever it is you want me to do.

I want to follow Jesus, I want to experience Jesus

Set the example. Be radical.

To you Dad’s and Mom’s… let me ask you a question this morning.

Question: Did getting married an having kids change your theology

Be an example

Kingdom first… The mission is bigger than your family

Matthew 6:13, “For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever, amen!”

Still surrender to Jesus.

Turn with me in your bible to 1 Corinthians 7.

Idol Worship…

Anything and any one that we place above our relationship with Jesus.

Live and take risks. Life is not logical.

What does it mean to live by faith.

The focus of our lives is not to focus on the family… but rather for our families to focus on Jesus.

What are we teaching in our homes?

Matthew 28:18-20

18  And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

It seems like much of the church is looking to find a gated community to protect them from the world. Jesus has called us to go out and change the world in Jesus name.

Are your kids seeing the real Jesus…

Get out of the bubble… How can God operate in your bubble.?

Is your life an adventure, are you experiencing the Holy Spirit?

The danger in America is when we put our families in front of Jesus.

Lee and I have been married for 35 years this July, we have 3 grown children, 3 grandchildren and a dog.

If I have learned anything in 35 years of marriage its this…

Genesis 2:18, “And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."

Its not good for man to be alone

God gives us helpers to accomplish His will in our lives.

Marriage is a wonderful means to that end.

We focus on marriage by focusing our marriage on Jesus.

For those of us who are Husbands here today, let me ask you a question? How will it be one day… When you and I stand before God one day and give an account of our lives. What impact did I have on my wife’s life regarding her relationship with Jesus?

Did I point here to Jesus, to a lead her closer to Him and help her learn to honor Him as she walked in obedience to His will for her life?

Here is a news flash… God didn’t create me for me, He created me for Him, for His Will and for His good pleasure. What is true for me is true for you too.

Matthew 25:23 “His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

You were faithful with a bunch of little things down there so I am going to make you ruler over many things!

No greater words to hear at the end of your life than, “Well done good and faithful servant…”

The less we focus on us the better our life becomes.

1 Corinthians 7

Paul is not making an argument against marriage but to put marriage in its proper perspective.

1 Corinthians 7:25-29

25  Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgment as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made trustworthy.

26  I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress--that it is good for a man to remain as he is:

27  Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.

28  But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you.

29  But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none,

Paul says even to the married here, “Live as though they had none…”

Please don’t misunderstand what Paul was suggesting here.

What the apostle is stressing is that time is short… live like you don’t have a spouse… be single minded… Thats not a contradiction to what Paul wrote in

Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her”

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 7:31, “…For the present form is passing away…”

The corinthian church was no stranger to idolatry… marriage can be a form of idolatry, something we put over our relationship with God.

We cant serve now… we are devoting this season of our life to “us”.

No marriage lasts forever… Marriage is something that passes away… its temporal. We will not be given in marriage in heaven. Did I hear an,  amen?

Matthew 22:30, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.”

For some that is sad, for others that is exciting…

Single, Married, Separated, or Divorced God’s plan for our lives has not changed and it will not change.

Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

Jesus made it clear, as His followers we are to go and make disciples… You obey what I have taught you then go and teach others also.

Everything we have belongs to God, we owe our existence to Him.

Colossians 1:16-18

16  For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

17  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

18  And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

In other words Jesus is to have first place in our lives in everything…

This house isn’t our own… It belongs to God.

Sometimes I look around my house and I wonder, Is it a home or a museum? What did God give us homes for since Jesus Himself never owned one.

Its to be a place of hospitality… In other words our homes are to be hospitals for the hurting, a place the sick can get made well, where we can be refreshed and restored.

Sadly, we have taken the term hospitality to mean entertainment…

My mom… Almost every time I called her to speak with her I’d ask her what are you doing? I’m organizing

She was just figuring it out… she was figuring out the Christian life is a radical way of life, of living.

My Mom before she died came to understand that the Christian life is a life lived for Jesus…

Go back to Matthew 28:18-20…

How many people have you baptized… When I was the Youth Pastor here many years ago…. We started a ministry in the summer time called “Pool Side Bible Studies” where on Sunday nights we met at different homes for the purpose of teaching the gospel to students and then doing baptisms and then celebrating with a swim party…

My wife and I had the pleasure of baptizing someone in our Jacuzzi. It was winter time, they were from another country and wanted to be baptized before they returned home so we baptized her in our hot tub. That was a sanctified hot tub!

Set apart for the Masters use.

Remember this if you are married today.

Marriage is about helping each other

The goal of marriage is walking together with Jesus, focusing on Him.

1 Corinthians 7:32-33

32  But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord--how he may please the Lord.

33  But he who is married cares about the things of the world--how he may please his wife.

The married man is worried about worldly things and how to please his wife.

The goal of life is to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord. To focus on the Lord.

Paul had seen married people and single people…

Do you think about your family or what God wants your family to do?

It’s not good for man to be alone… I’ll make a helper who is suitable for Him…

Helper in Genesis 2 is the same word used in John 15 for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is in our life to help us understand what the will of God is for our lives.

John 15:26 (NKJV)
26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

We have a mission on earth, to learn to live for eternity…to learn how to live in the light of eternity.

My job is help my wife and kids prepare for eternity.

Our goal as Christian parents is we are aiming for children who have been redeemed by the Gospel, who love God with all of their hearts, and God has birthed within them the new life of Christ, and they love God, not just because they have to or because rules are good, but their very motivation has been changed by the Gospel. That’s what we are aiming for as Christian parents.

So we study the Bible, we obey bible, and we share the Bible…

Ephesians 3

The world is going to be the world… what’s sad is when the church ceases to be the church and we look like the world.

If the church is honest today we aren’t that much different than the world around us. Paul warns Timothy of what life will be like in the last days…

2 Timothy 3:1-4 (NKJV)

1  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:

2  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3  unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,

4  traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

Paul’s writing Timothy here wasn’t to warn him about what would be going on in the world but rather what the church will look like in many ways in the last days.

If there ever was a time to preach a message titled, “Get over yourself” now is that time before its too late.

2 Timothy 3:14, “But as for you, continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them”

“But as for you” … keep your eyes on Jesus!

Ephesians 3:14-19 (NKJV)

14  For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15  from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

16  that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,

17  that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

18  may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height--

19  to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

I love this prayer Paul prays for the people…

This is serious prayer…

Verses 14-15, 14  For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15  from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

Begging God for you… getting on your knees for your people…

I bow before the Father… There is one being, one father with whom every father has his being.

We are not that important. You know who is in important? The One who gives you breath.

Verse 16: According to the riches of His glory… “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,”

Paul prays to God because he knows God can make a difference.

God has the ability to change the course of human history…

God, I need you! You have all power. I am praying that you would put your Spirit into _________ and that they would know Your strength though your Spirit in their inner man.

Ezekiel 36Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NKJV)

26  I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

27  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

God says, Im going to put my Spirit inside a human being… You cant put all of God inside a human heart… its the whole the valley of dry bones… to bring the dead to life. They knew about the ark of the covenant, the Holy of holies. That type of power

God said, I am going to take out their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh

And From the inside they are going to want to obey My Commands!

Ephesians 6:1-4

1  Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

2  "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise:

3  "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

4  And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

We make it about rules… “If I could get them to do this or that” instead of getting on our faces and seeking God’s face.

Either the Holy Spirit enters our heart and changes us from the inside out or there is no hope…

The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life will choke out the Word of God…

Matthew 13:3-9 (NKJV)

3  Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Behold, a sower went out to sow.

4  And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them.

5  Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth.

6  But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.

7  And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.

8  But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

9  He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

Jesus then explains the parable of the sower…

Matthew 13:18-23 (NKJV)

18  "Therefore hear the parable of the sower:

19  When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.

20  But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

21  yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

22  Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

23  But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

When the Word of God settles into our heart we become like Paul and Peter, “slaves to what is right”, God is our master.

Otherwise you set up systems to control people.

My accountability partner didn’t call me… so I went back to drinking, drugs, pornography… whatever…

No, No No… You went back because you never left…

You cant leave Jesus, He is the seal of my salvation, I have been rooted in His love… I am grounded in His love…

Verse 18:  may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height--

Help them to know… how big this Christian life is…

Verse 19:  to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

How do we teach something that surpasses knowledge… I cant do what only the Holy Spirit can do….

Pray that people would know God… know Jesus deeply personally… So much so they couldn’t walk away if they wanted too.

What is your goal in life? What do you want to be known for?

The way they live their life… “Filled with all the fullness of God”

I don’t just want you to show up to church and to its functions… what I want is a group of people who want to be naturally supernatural…

I want to be around people who really believe, “Greater is He who is in you than He who is in the world…” Some of us just need to get over ourselves. Your life isn’t about you, its about Jesus. Its not what you can do for Him, but what Jesus desires to do in and through you as you surrender your heart to Him.

“He who has begun this good work in you is faithful”

Search your heart today… what are the goals of your life.

Does your life attract the world?

If, not I am going to invite you to pray a dangerous prayer.

God, fill me with Your fullness…

“Filled with the fullness of God”

I want to be fearless, I want to be courageous, I desire a radical faith that the world cannot deny.

So I invite You Lord Jesus, prune me, change me, cut out of my life those things that are not needed and not pleasing and glorifying You!

Forgive me for settling for so much less than the fullness of You and allowing myself to be filled with so many lesser things…

Draw me to You I pray, in Jesus name!

Amen!
