Text: Galatians 3:6-18, Genesis 15

Title: Grace, Grace Grace, Grace…

Galatians 3:6-18
6 just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."
7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed."
9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."
11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."
12 Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them."
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"),
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15 Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.
16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.
17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect.
18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Story of pastor asked to do the funeral for a terrible man… his brother said, say something nice… say he is a saint… goes through the list of terrible deeds.. but compared to his brother he is a saint…

There is none righteous no not one…

We want to compare ourselves who make us feel better about ourselves

The ground at the foot of the Cross is level…

We need to understand we don’t measure up based on works… God is changing us…

Our righteousness is through Christ by faith. Imputed righteousness.

None of us have been fully developed in Christ, we know this by looking around

The Galatians are into measuring sticks…

Religious Pharisees came and are telling the people if they want to be worthy they need to be circumcised and keep the law of Moses.

Something in us feels better about tangible performance

There is no salvation apart from the Holy Spirit.

Verses 1-5… Paul said… You had a supernatural beginning and you will have a super natural continuance.

Galatians 3:1-5

1  O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?

2  This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3  Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

4  Have you suffered so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?

5  Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?--

Its never by the law… its always by faith…

The same grace that saves you is the same grace that sustains you!

Verse 6:just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."

The Judaizers are among you and they bring a standard to live by… an impossible standard

Abraham wasn’t even a Jew, he was from Ur of the Chaledeans, an idol worshiper who God called, who trusted God. God made a covenant with Abraham…

“Covenant” is the story of relationship built on promise.

God is making promises to you that I am going to keep. Covenant is initiated by God Himself.

Covenant… promise… redemption… its like a bottle has a redemption value on it. God paid the redemption value which was the Cross of Cross.

Verse 7:  “Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham”.

Faith… more than intellectual belief. Its staking your life on it.

Abraham… to teach that faith is active one of my favorite pastors tells the story of something he wouldn’t recommend you do but it made a great point on faith. He brought a ballon into the service and asked if the congregation if they thought the pastor could pin the ballon to the wall and hit it with a BB gun. The congregation raised their hand… How about someone could hold it in their hand and he could shoot it. How about someone could put it between their teeth. The ballon represented the promise of God… One guy kept his hand up. Had him come and fill out a liability release form. He did it and put the balloon in his teeth and the pastor got out the BB gun and actually shot the balloon out of the guys teeth. Everybody got mad…

Paul is demonstrating that the just shall live by faith in Jesus Christ…

As long as our eyes are on Jesus we can do whatever God calls us to do.

Problem… to the Galatians, you began in the Spirit and now you are going to try to complete it in the flesh

Faith is the home run of our life… Its the basis of all we do…

Galatians 3:2-5

2  This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3  Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

4  Have you suffered so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?

5  Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?--

1. Experience… Let me ask you a question? We you saved by Spirit or by the flesh. They were pagan Greeks.

How did you receive the Spirit, by the works of the flesh or by faith? How about miracles, how about the sufferings you went through? It was all God

Galatians 3:10-11

10  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."

11  But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."

2. Teaching of Scripture

Paul calls the prophet Habbak

Habakkuk 2:4, “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.”

Its all about faith… Paul says to Habakkuk, no further questions

Galatians 3:12-14

12  Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them."

13  Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"),

14  that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Paul calls on Moses… the law is great as long as you keep it perfectly…the problem with the law is you have to keep it perfectly and no one except Jesus has.

Abraham… Genesis 15

Genesis 15:1-21 (NKJV)

1  After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."

2  But Abram said, "Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"

3  Then Abram said, "Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!"

4  And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir."

5  Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be."

6  And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

7  Then He said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."

8  And he said, "Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will inherit it?"

9  So He said to him, "Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."

10  Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.

11  And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12  Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.

13  Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.

14  And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

15  Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.

16  But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."

17  And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.

A prototype of all salvations

Abraham was not a Jew at this time

Descendants as the stars of the heavens

Seed coming through you… Jesus, the promised Messiah

Transferred all righteousness

The law came 430 years latter…

body is as good as dead…

God gave him the

Go it an animal… to make a promise or a covenant, and an oath….

Take the animals… prepare the sacrifice

Cross my heart and hope to die… may we be like these animals here…

Abraham did what God called him to do… He collected all the animals and he did as

God cut the covenant alone…

God is saying, Abraham I know that in 430 after Israel goes into the nation of Egypt I am going to send a deliverer, Moses, who will bring them out and I will give you My law and yet the people won’t keep the law. I was going to base this on me and you but if I did the promise would be nullified.

Abraham, you are going to fail Me. You are going to sleep with your wife’s handmaiden…

If the promise is based on you, the promise would be nullified when you don’t keep your end of the bargain. You don’t keep your end of the bargain…

I came here with a flaming fire… I cut the covenant alone..

It has nothing to do with you, it has everything to do with Me. It’s not based on what you do, its based on Me and what My Son can do. My Son Jesus Christ

I based this covenant on My faithfulness

This promise, this oath, this covenant is going to unilateral, unconditional, its going to be eternal, it is going to be irrevocable…

Because I am perfect, I never fail

I will lead you in victory…
