Fathers Day

A Father’s Gift

Psalm 112:1-4, 6

Psalm 112:1-4,

1  Praise the LORD! Blessed (joyful) is the man who fears the LORD, Who delights greatly in His commandments.

2  His descendants will be mighty (successful) on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3  Wealth and riches will be in his house, And his righteousness endures forever. (Legacy)

4  Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

Psalm 112:6

6 Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.

Three things that stand out from this passage are

Generosity, Compassion, Righteousness.

God’s desire is that we raise generous, compassionate and righteous kids.

What is success?

What is your definition of success?

Society or culture says success is, raising well rounded, well educated and happy kids. Exposed to everything…

To be truly successful you want to be focused on a few things and do them well. Gifts…

Thats a lie, godly parents protect their children and they screen them from the harmful things of this world…

How many parents use sun block on your kids?

We need to block our children from the harmful elements of this world, not expose them to them

The goal of life is not happiness? It is pleasing God.

Godly dads are more concerned about their children holiness than trying to keep them happy.

After all, God never said “be happy as I am happy”. He did however say in 1 Peter 1:16, “because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."

What is the by product of being connected to Jesus is Galatians… Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

The opposite is true regarding being well rounded

Matthew 16:26, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

What does it matter if our kids are successful in this world but not in the things of God? That would be a waste of life, an empty life.

Dont forget dads. Our job is to unleash Christ centered, biblically anchored (molded by Christ and His Word), world changers, (for such a time as this)

God’s Word is what equips our children for what He has prepared for them.

Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Apply

What are we going to expose them to helps determine what they will become.

In this world, just by nature in a sin filled world they are going to be exposed to peer pressure, materialism, and overly sexualized world.

But…

Proverbs 13:20  “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

You can not force your children to love God, expose them to people who do

1. Expose them to the joy of knowing God

John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

This is eternal life… that they may know you.

Kids aren’t rejecting God today, they are rejecting religion…

Rules without relationship leads to rebellion

Dad… Expose your kids to the joy on knowing god by giving the glory to God for every blessing you receive in this life and share His blessings with other people.

James 1:17  “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Dad… Connect the good things in life to the giver of life.

Help my children to know the heart of God through His Word and through prayer.

Pray often as needed…  when someones hurt, confused, struggling, when something good happens give God the glory. When a police car or ambulance goes by… pray.

Expose them to the joy of knowing God personally…

Read God’s Word every day…. It’s not a rule… its a relationship.

They see Mom and Dad reading the Bible every day… Model a faith thats real…

Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

The next generation is watching. Is God your source?

If you don’t have it they aren’t going to want it.

Our relationship with God? Is it real or is it fake?

I need God, He is my source, He corrects me, He leads me and He guides me.

What is number 1 again?

1. Expose them to the joy of knowing God personally.

2. Expose your kids to the presence and the power of God in His church.

Acts 2:42-47

42  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43  Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

44  Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,

45  and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

46  So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

47  praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

“I’m looking for a church that meets my need” That is the most selfish statement we can make. The church doesn’t exist for me I exist for the church. We exist for the glory of God.

Take your kids to church… Let them see God working…

We don’t just go to church, we are the church. We exist to minister to God and to reach the world.

Church is community, our unity, its part of who we are…

Do you want to go to church?

Do you want to go to school today? We never say that…

Do you want to go to soccer practice today?

How about ballet lessons?

We should not be asking our children if they want to go to church. We should be ensuring they get there regularly. Model the importance not the convenience.

Altar of convenience…

I need to ask myself, is my ministry to Jesus on the altar of sacrifice or on the altar of convenience?

Is Jesus my life or just part of my life?

If you overrule church for other things but never overrule other things for church you are sending the wrong message.

Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Remember, what a parent does in moderation as child does in excess.

If you overrule church for other things but never overrule other things for church you are sending the wrong message.

I’m going to church to enjoy His presence and His people, thats what we do. We are followers of Jesus.

Where would Jesus be on Sunday?

Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

1. Expose them to joy of knowing God.

2. Expose them to the presence and the power of God in His church.

3. Show them to the joy of being used by God.

God has gifted them.

God created them for service, for ministry.

God is seeking to save that which is lost.

To feed the hungry, to share His love with the lost.

Dad’s you have an amazing calling.

You are called to unleash

Expose them to the joy of knowing Jesus.

Expose them to God’s presence and His power in the

Expose them to the thrill of being used

The seed planted in the good soil will grow.

If you want to see your children in God, let you children see God in their father.
