"You've Got A Friend"

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends."

John 15:13

Dinah Craik wrote a poem titled, "Friendship" that goes like this. "O, the comfort - the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts, nor measure words - but pouring them right out - just as they are - chaff and grain together - Certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them - Keep what is worth keeping - And with the breath of kindness blow the rest away."

Every time I read that I am reminded of the love each of us has in Jesus. I also read that poem with the desire to be that kind of friend to others. Proverbs 17:17 tells us that a friend loves at all times. God wastes no time in making it clear what a true friend is and what they are not. No matter what we do our true friends remain faithful even when we are not. Thats a Jesus quality why true friendship is such a rare treasure.

I recall years ago something Dr. James Dobson shared on his radio program along these lines, "if you can find one person in this life with whom you can share your heart and soul with and who without reservation or hesitation accepts you without judgement for who you are, you are rare indeed as the majority of people in this life do not have a single person with whom they can confide."

Obviously there are degrees of friendship and what Proverbs is referring must represent the pinnacle of the mountain. For each of us the first person who should come to mind when we think about friendship is our Savior, Jesus Christ the friend of sinners! Proverbs 17 goes on to say that a brother is born for adversity. Some interpret this to say our family members cause us grief but that could not be further from the truth of the text. The brother born here is a gift from God who is to be a comfort to us during our troubled times.

Solomon wrote in the book of Ecclesiastes on this very point when he penned the words of Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 , "Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken." Did you notice in verse 10 where it says, "when he falls?" Each of us will stumble at some point in this life, we get easily tripped up and yet Solomon reminds us of the wonderful gift of friends who are there in our worst moments and stand by us and assist to get us back on our feet.

Let me ask you, do you have a family member or a friend like this? If so, praise the Lord, cherish them, tell them, and seek to reciprocate the same kindness back to them for they are truly a gift from God, a visible manifestation of His amazing grace to you. Proverbs 18:24 teaches us, "A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." When I read this Proverb an old quote comes to mind, "I went to church to find a friend and found none. I went to church to be a friend and I made many." If you are need of a friend today let me encourage you to begin by showing yourself friendly to others! Don't go out looking for a friend but instead go out to be a friend and you will be surprised how much easier it is!

Why not determine today to take the first step and reach out to others. Take an interest in them; prefer them better than yourself, because that is exactly what Jesus Christ has done for you and me. After all it was Jesus Himself who said in John 15:16-17, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another."

Thank God today for the gift of friendship that we enjoy with Jesus, thank God for the gift of true friends. Thank Him for the opportunity we have to reflect His life to others as we befriend them in His name!

"Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men."
