"Why Easter Changes Everything"

"When I saw him, I fell down at his feet like a dead man. He placed his right hand on me and said, "Don't be afraid! I am the first and the last. I am the living one! I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I have authority over death and the world of the dead."

Revelation 1:17-18

Of all the weeks out of the year this just might be my favorite one each year. When I was in high school we would be on Easter break this week and that meant "the beach" but when I became a Christian the week took on a whole new meaning for me. It really is about Easter and each year I make it a point to read the Gospel story of Jesus suffering and crucifixion and ultimate resurrection to appreciate a fresh what the Lord has accomplished for those of us who have placed their hope and trust in Him.

Easter changes everything as it's the difference between life and death. I remember watching the Wizard of Oz on t.v. growing up and I couldn't wait for that exact moment when the show changed from black and white to living color right before your eyes. Being my age, I grew up in the era of the black and white television and then the invention of color television that ensued. The Wizard of OZ was filmed originally all in black and white and then the films creators went back and made the movie begin in its original black and white format but as Dorothy and her companions reached the yellow brick road they turned the movie to color and the yellow brick road as it were came to life.

I can still picture that bright yellow brick road and I can hear those birds singing as I recall sitting there in front of the television with my mom and two sisters and brother as the transformation occurred and then hearing my mom and sisters gasp with excitement experiencing the change for the very first time. For years, (before the invention of the VCR not DVR) we couldn't wait for the movie to come on television so we could watch that scene again as there was no way to stop and rewind it. It never grew old watching the movie come to life and I still enjoy to this day that scene.

To only know black and white television and then suddenly see with your own eyes the effect of color on everything you are viewing reminds me of the difference Easter makes in the lives of those who come to believe Jesus Christ is truly the promised Messiah, the Savior of the world. Easter changes everything because Jesus brings everything to life when He conquered sin and death on Calvary's Cross. Jesus turns this otherwise black and white world into living color. Everything Jesus touches comes to life, including me and you!

The Gospel of John captures the scene where Jesus flips the switch as it were taking our black and white perspective of life and death and turning it into color, literally living color when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. Right before Jesus turns Mary and Martha's bleak dark world into color so alive, Jesus reminds Martha of something I pray speaks volumes to you this week heading into Easter. John writes, "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world" (John 11:25-27).

Yes, loved one, Easter changes everything because Jesus lives! And because Jesus lives He can and does offer eternal life to all, (did you get that), to any and all who will come to Him by faith. John 1:12-13 says it plainly, "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." Easter changes everything because its God's greatest gift to us.

If you feel like your life is black and white and lifeless today just know that can all change in an instant, faster than the Wizard of Oz went from black and white to color, your whole world can be changed too if only you would come to Jesus Christ and accept His invitation to "Follow Me". Following Jesus won't bring your final destination in this life to the Emerald City, nor will it lead you on a path of yellow painted bricks. No, loved one, it will be so much better, so much more, beyond anything you have ever seen or known before. Easter changes everything and because of it you will end your journey one day in heaven, (as there really is no place like being home with the Lord) where every street is paved with gold. Its not called heaven for nothing! Happy Easter!

"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its savior."

John 3:16-17
