"Now You Will Thank Me"

"Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves."

John 14:11

Life tends be a contrast of extremes, like you cant have one thing without the exact opposite at some point down the road. Highs followed by low's, bitter by sweet, dark by light, happy then sad…you get it, and the list goes on and on. It's the day after Christmas today and what some people already endured before Christmas and are now enjoying the opposite effect, I find myself on the other end of the spectrum passing in the opposite direction this morning. I find myself paddling towards unfamiliar waters that cause me trepidation as I sit contemplating my next move.

Some, mostly parents (or in my case a grandparent) of children undoubtedly had gifts they had to assemble to be ready for Christmas morning. Not too many children (or adults) I have ever met want their favorite toy to come unassembled and still in a box on Christmas morning. I firmly believe that the more expensive the present is the more likely the child is to play with the box the gift came in, as I have witnessed this played out (no pun intended) dozens of times with my own children through the years. And most certainly no child should have to endure the pain and suffering of watching their parents whimper as they sit lost among the agglomeration of colors and numbers with no end in sight.

As I looked at the box of one of my granddaughters gifts that was sitting in our garage this morning I immediately thanked God for His omniscience as only God could fully understand the plight the human heart feels in moments like this. A mixture of anger and pleasure, joy and disdain all rolled up in one emotion. There is nothing I enjoy more in this life than seeing the look of delight on the faces of my grandchildren when they open a gift that they were hoping for. Contrast that against the feeling of despair that grips my heart as I open the box and begin the trek of putting a plethora of parts together and you will get a glimpse into my world this morning.

Yet, I love life lessons, I enjoy word pictures and most of all I love when God speaks to me through every day life. This morning was no exception. As I thought about how to tackle this project I sensed the Lord speaking to my heart in an almost tangible voice. I have walked with God long enough I recognize His voice. All I heard was, "Now you will thank Me." I don't know if you have experienced this or not in your own relationship with God but for me, if God says something to me I have discovered He doesn't repeat Himself. I stopped and immediately began to think about what I had just heard in my heart. "Now you will thank Me" felt more like a clue than a statement so I continued to look at the box and almost instantaneously I felt as if I understood what the Lord meant. I try not to use the word exactly any longer as with God I never exactly understand anything, its more like dimly darkly for me.

"Now you will thank Me" is the need I feel today to thank God that He walked the walk and talked the talk. "Now you will thank Me" is a reminder for me today of the great length God went when He sent His only begotten Son to this world to reveal Himself to us and to not just point but both tell us and demonstrate for us the way of eternal life. As I looked at the box my grand daughters gift came in I was trying to decide if I would read the instructions or if I would just try to put the play house together by focusing on the picture on the box. It was at that very moment when the Lord spoke and said, "Now you will thank Me" because it was Jesus Himself who said in John 14:11, "Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves."

You see, loved one, it was as if Jesus was saying to us, "I know you are trying to figure life out the same way you are trying to figure Me out." Those who had watched Jesus do miracles were astonished as were those who listened to Jesus teachings, as when He taught He did so as One with authority. Jesus didn't spend all his time dropping names as some do in an attempt to make themselves appear to be somebody. Jesus spoke in the first person saying, "I tell you", "I say to you" and those listening got it, like it or not.

Yet, Jesus didn't let it go there, He took it a step further. Jesus made it clear to His audience that they could trust His words because they were His words, not someone else's. And better still, if those listening were struggling whether to believe Jesus or not, He made concessions for that too. Jesus said if you cant believe the words I speak even though every word He speaks is true, then just believe the things He does, the miracles and such as everything Jesus does He said He was going to do and everything Jesus said He would do He faithfully does. Thats why we say of Jesus, "He talked the talk and He walked the walk" as they were one and the same.

Now it made perfect sense to me this morning what the Lord meant when He spoke to my heart saying, "Now you will thank Me" as I set out to put together the play house. I was equipped with both words on paper as well as a picture of the finished play house on the box in front of me to study along with the instructions the manufacturer supplied.

My bible tells me the story of God's plan of redemption. I could read only the Old Testament and I would get it that God had promised that one day a Messiah, a Savior would come into this world and rescue those who would place their hope and trust in Him. I have the instructions from God's Word. But, even better, I have the New Testament that reveals Jesus to me. I get a visual of who God is and what He is capable of doing by looking at Jesus and watching how He lived and what He did day by day. I have both the written words and the picture on the box you might say as to better understand God and how to go about trusting Him as I follow Him.

Yes, today I am thanking God for the wonderful reminder that though life has many different experiences along the way and many times we have no idea how all the pieces fit together, we have His Word and we have a picture of God in Jesus Christ to help us each and every day. Yes, loved one, God was right. I am thanking Him today, I am thanking Him right now for His Word and for sending us His Son, for sending us Jesus to show us the way. Jesus said it best, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me." Pretty simple if you ask me. Keep your eyes on Jesus, loved one, and read the instructions as God promises you will like the finished product, you will enjoy what you will become in Jesus when He finishes the work He has begun in you!

"being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ"

Philippians 1:6
