"How Big Is Your God?"

"O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!"…"When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained."

Psalm 8:1,3

Can you recall the last time you sat and thought about how big God is? Lets think about it this morning because the more you and I understand how big God is, our problems in this life will seem very small. The psalmist tells us that God has set His glory above the heavens so that means God is bigger than the heavens He has created. To get an idea of just how big heaven is we need to understand the way science measures that kind of distance. Science uses light.

Light travels at the speed of 186,000 miles per second. We call that the speed of light. A light year is 186,000 miles per second for an entire year. If you could travel at the speed of light, you would be able to circle the Earth's equator about 7.5 times in just one second! A light-year is the distance light travels in one year. So just how far is a light year? Multiply the number of seconds in one year by the number of miles that light travels in one second, and there you have it: one light-year. Do the math and it comes out to about 5.88 trillion miles. Thats a long way!

Science tells us that it would take approximately 100,000 light years to get from one end of our galaxy to the other. And from what science has been able to gather with our limited ability to see, since telescopes can only look so far, there is something like 350 billion other galaxies out there besides the earths galaxy. Why is that so important to know today? I don't know about you but I can worry about a lot of things, mostly things I have no control over so for me and my tiny brain it simply reminds me we serve a BIG God who is both bigger than and in control of this humongous world of ours.

God tells us in His Word that He's set His glory above the heavens. Psalm 8:1 tells us, "O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! Verse 3 goes on to say, "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained." To think God not only created the moon and the stars but He has numbered each one of them and called them by name. All I can say is wow!

And yet this big God of ours isn't just aware of all the galaxies that make up our universe. God is also very much aware of me and you! The psalmist is overwhelmed by the thought that the same God who has created the moon and the stars which he can see is also mindful of us! Psalm 8:4 captures the moment of his awareness, "What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?"

I don't know what you are up against today in your life but I do know this. God is mindful of you! And because He is mindful of you He is seeking you out today to visit with you. God isn't so busy managing the universe that He doesn't have time for you. He is perfectly aware of all that you are going through and seeks to remind us, we are not alone.

Yes, loved one, the world is so very big and you and I can seem so small and yet God wants us to know we are not alone. Read Psalm 139:1-18 and understand today that what was true of David in this psalm is also true regarding me and you!

"O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall fall on me," Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.
