"Grow in Grace"

"but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen."

2 Peter 3:18

My wife has a garden in our backyard that she tends to throughout the week. She has a green thumb and my life is blessed by the fruit of her labor. Monday afternoon she was showing our oldest granddaughter Reese all the plants that were coming into bloom. As they walked together in the garden my wife was pointing out how some of her plants are small right now but that in just a few short weeks they will be standing tall producing the very fruits and vegetables for which they were created by God to do. All they need to do is cling to the vine!

Like everything healthy, God's desire for His children is that each of us grow in grace. Grace is best defined as "getting what I don't deserve" and grace with regard to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ means to grow in the knowledge that our salvation is a gift to us from God and not something we could ever earn on our own. We are saved the same way fruit grows, we cling to the vine!

The reason Peter says we need to grow in grace is because it will keep us humble and fruitful as we focus our lives on what Jesus has done for us. Its very difficult to remain proud when you are constantly made aware of not only God's grace in your life but His mercy too. You recall that mercy means, "not getting what I deserve". God in His mercy has not given us what we do deserve when we break His commands which is eternal death. Instead, He has offered to us His grace, His unmerited and undeserved, one way love, the very thing we don't deserve, being eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Grow in grace, grow in Jesus life, loved one! Commit yourself to spending time in God's Word today which acts like fertilizer for our soul causing us to grow in His grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Remember, as we cling to the Vine and the life of Jesus grows in us, the peaceable fruit of His righteousness becomes ours to enjoy and share with others!

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
